Magnesium sulfate injection (50%) is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, concentrated solution of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate in Water for Injection, USP. It is administered by the intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) routes as an electrolyte replenisher or anticonvulsant. The 50% solution must be diluted to a concentration of 20% or less prior to IV infusion or IM injection in infants and children. The rate of administration should be slow and cautious to avoid producing hypermagnesemia.
